I interrupt my completely self-generated and random blogging programme to bring you a new feature. Called 'I can't believe this got funding', these posts will bring to you, from time to time, some of the more spurious - or just plain silly - uses of scientific funding. In an era where Arts programmes are cash-strapped, you really have to wonder how some of these projects justify themselves. In a not-a-cure-for-killer-disease exclusive, scientists can now reveal that, contrary to popular belief, horizontal stripes do not make someone appear larger. In fact, its is vertical stripes, usually thought to be more slimming, which are the ones to be avoided. I'm sure we'll all sleep more easily now.
